We often focus on how to build and instill literacy skills in children, but adults need these skills as well. According to recent studies, 21% of adults in America have a low or insufficient literacy rate.
For early literacy in kids, Every Child Ready to Read focuses on the five practices of Talk, Sing, Read, Write, and Play. Participating in activities that involve these practices build up literacy skills, such as narrative skills, phonological awareness, letter knowledge, print awareness, vocabulary, and print motivation. These practices can easily be incorporated in activities for adults and help improve literacy. It’s never too late to strengthen skills or learn something new.
All of these practices can be found in the library’s adult programming and resources. Check out the following programs where you can build and support your literacy skills while also having fun at the library!
Talk – Talking develops narrative skills and vocabulary.
Sing – Music can slow down language and build vocabulary
Read – Reading is a skill that you can always build and expand
Write - Writing (and drawing) develops narrative skills and connects written language to oral language
Play – Playing helps you think symbolically
These are just some of our upcoming programs. Continue to check out our events page and our monthly print calendar to find more programs!
